Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Brother Francesco Ielpo, the Custodian of the Holy Land, were stopped by Israeli police while walking to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass.
According to a joint statement from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Custody of the Holy Land, the two top Catholic leaders were going privately, without any form of procession or public ceremony, but were forced to turn back. This is the first time in centuries that Catholic Church leaders have been prevented from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass at the holy site, where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and resurrected.
This incident has caused a strong reaction.
The United States Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called the decision “difficult to understand or justify.” He noted that the Patriarch’s group consisted of only four people, well below the 50-person limit allowed for gatherings under Home Front Command guidelines.
“It is difficult to understand or justify that the Patriarch would be denied entry to the Church on Palm Sunday for a private ceremony,” Mr. Huckabee wrote.
French President Emmanuel Macron strongly condemned the incident, saying it “adds to a worrying increase in violations of the status of the Holy Places in Jerusalem.” He stressed that freedom of worship must be guaranteed for all religions.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the action “ an offense not only against believers, but against every community that recognizes religious freedom .” Italy has summoned the Israeli ambassador to express its protest.
On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to justify the action by saying that there was no malicious intent, but only special concern for the safety of the Patriarch and his group.
He added that authorities are preparing a plan to allow church leaders to enter and pray in the coming days of Holy Week./ Pamphlet
