In a speech delivered during the Rimini Meeting, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke about the international situation and the challenges of the European Union.
“We did not hesitate for a minute to support Israel's right to security after the horror of the October 7 massacre. But at the same time, we cannot remain silent in the face of a reaction that has gone beyond the principle of proportionality, claiming many innocent victims and even involving Christian communities, which have always been a factor in maintaining balance in the region,” Meloni said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Italy's commitment to medical evacuations from Gaza: "We save children in Gaza. We reclaim Italy's role in this crisis and are the leading non-Muslim country for medical evacuations. I am proud to be among those who save human lives."
She also did not spare criticism of Brussels.
Commenting on former Prime Minister Mario Draghi's harsh words on the European Union, Meloni said: "The EU is increasingly condemned to geopolitical irrelevance, unable to respond to the challenges posed by China and the US. I agree with Draghi's criticisms and have often made them public, to the point of being harshly criticized by some."
She added that the EU's security is reliant on the US and underlined the need for a stronger European defence policy: "Regaining control of our history and destiny is not easy, painless or free, because for decades we have left European security to the US."
Speaking about the situation in Ukraine, Meloni expressed optimism: "After three and a half years without dialogue with Russia, the spark of hope for negotiations has opened thanks to Trump's initiative and the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people. We must strongly believe in this opportunity, contributing with ideas and proposals."
The Italian Prime Minister emphasized a balanced approach, combining support for international security, social policies and Italy's engagement as a key actor on the global stage.
