US President Donald Trump has significantly reduced the deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach an agreement on the conflict in Ukraine. Out of 50 days, Moscow has 10-12 days to reach peace, otherwise the US will launch 'retaliation'.
The statement was made during a press conference in Scotland, immediately after his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
" I'm going to set a new deadline, about 10 or 12 days. There's no reason to wait. It was 50 days, I wanted to be generous, but we just don't see any progress being made, " Trump said, appearing confident that the deal could be reached quickly. "We've lost valuable time, and this has to be closed quickly," he stressed, positioning himself as the leader who can broker an end to the war.
Donald Trump has revealed that he came close to reaching a ceasefire with Russia several times, but potential agreements were shattered by surprise attacks on Ukraine.
" It was like we were very close to a ceasefire and maybe peace... and suddenly missiles are flying over Kiev and other cities. And I say: What's going on here? " Trump said, adding that he did not want to call Putin a "liar", but that this situation has been repeated several times.
He warned that if no deal is reached, the United States will impose new sanctions and secondary tariffs on Russia, stressing: “ I don’t want to do this to Russia, I love the Russian people, they are great people… but a deal has to be made. A lot of people are dying ,”
Regarding his new deadline, Trump said he would confirm it concretely within 24 hours: " There's no reason to wait. If I know what the outcome is going to be, why should we wait? "
Trump also commented on the conflict in the Gaza Strip, praising the role of the European Union in providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. " Gaza is a very troubled area, and it has been for decades ," he said.
Regarding the issue of the hostages held by Hamas, Trump said there had been progress, but it was slow. " They're left with a few hostages, and that makes the deal more difficult. Once they release them, they're not going to have any shields ," he said, accusing Hamas of using the hostages as a "weapon of defense."
