US President Donald Trump has declared that US forces have “totally destroyed” every military target on Iran’s Kharg Island. Trump warned that oil infrastructure could also be hit if Tehran interferes with freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, Trump said that so far he has decided not to strike energy facilities on the island, but stressed that this decision could change if Iran or other actors impede the safe passage of ships in this strategic maritime corridor.
"I have chosen not to destroy the oil infrastructure on Kharg Island. If Iran or others interfere with the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," he said.
On the other hand, Iranian authorities warned that any attack on their energy facilities would bring a harsh response. Tehran stated that oil and energy infrastructure belonging to companies cooperating with the United States could "turn into a pile of ashes" if Iranian energy facilities were attacked.
Kharg Island is considered a key point for the Iranian economy, as around 90% of the country's oil exports pass through this strategic terminal.
Meanwhile, the security situation in the region remains tense. According to Iraqi officials, the United States embassy in Baghdad has been hit by a rocket. This is the second attack on the American embassy since the beginning of the conflict between the US and Israel against Iran.
Several armed groups backed by Tehran, united under the umbrella of the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” movement, have claimed responsibility for the daily missile and drone attacks on US bases in the region. The attacks come after the killing of two members of the Kataeb Hezbollah group, one of whom is reported to have been a key figure in the Iran-linked network.
At the same time, the United States is expected to send a Marine unit and other warships to the Middle East, as part of a reinforcement of its military presence in the region.
Loud explosions were also reported in Doha. Qatar's Interior Ministry announced that authorities had managed to prevent an Iranian missile attack.
