Trump warned of tariffs on European cars, Brussels reacts: We will respond to

Brussels' reaction to US President Donald Trump's announcement of his intention to increase tariffs on European cars was immediate, warning that if the US takes measures that are contrary to the trade agreement, Europe will use all the measures at its disposal.

Brussels stated that it has strictly adhered to and fulfilled all the commitments arising from the agreement with the US on this issue.

" The European Union is implementing the commitments of the Joint Declaration in line with normal legislative practice, keeping the US side fully informed throughout the process. We remain in close contact with our counterparts, while seeking clarity on the US commitments. The EU remains fully committed to a predictable and mutually beneficial transatlantic relationship. However, if the US takes measures that are contrary to the Joint Declaration, we will keep all options open to protect European interests ," stressed the responsible Commission spokesperson, Olof Gill.

Earlier today, Trump said he intends to raise tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25%. In a post on social media, Trump claimed that the decision was based on “the European Union’s failure to honor our trade agreement,” adding that there will be no tariffs on vehicles manufactured in the United States.

This development marks a fundamental reversal of the agreement reached by the two sides last summer. Specifically, on July 27, during the meeting in Scotland between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the foundations of a new trade approach were laid, which were reflected in the Joint Declaration released on August 21.
