Bad weather and torrential rains caused one of the worst floods ever to hit Libya. The floods destroyed everything in the coastal city of Derna and left behind thousands of dead bodies.
According to a Libyan interior ministry official, the death toll has reached 5,300 people and the number is expected to rise, given the fact that over 11,000 people are still missing.
The Interior Ministry announced the toll on Tuesday, as rescue and relief operations stepped up and Libya's rival governments appeared to be putting aside their long-standing enmities to deal with the destruction.
Derna, the city hardest hit by the devastating Mediterranean storm Daniel, was covered in pools of red after raging torrents of water burst two dams on Sunday night and swallowed whole parts of the city, sweeping away buildings filled with a number of unknown residents.
The International Organization for Migration reported that 30,000 people in Derna have been left homeless by the floods, which also blocked many of the city's roads and caused widespread power and communication outages.
Libyan al-Masar TV channel said a hospital in Derna is overflowing with corpses and has started placing them in the square outside
Meanwhile, the Libyan Red Crescent, which has been focusing efforts on search and rescue missions, has pulled bodies from the murky waters that have engulfed the city.
International aid organizations appealed on Wednesday for funds to deal with the large number of displaced people.
