The former British ambassador to the United States has been released on bail after being arrested on Monday on suspicion of abuse of office.

Peter Mandelson, 72, was released pending further investigation as British authorities continue their investigation into the case. He was arrested following the release of US Justice Department documents linked to financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

This is the second arrest in the UK linked to investigations into senior officials' ties to US financier Jeffrey Epstein. Last week, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, known as the former Prince Andrew, was also arrested on suspicion of abuse of public office and later released after questioning.

According to authorities, both Mandelson and Andrew are suspected of inappropriately sharing British government information with Epstein.

Police are investigating allegations that Mandelson passed government information to Epstein about 15 years ago. At this stage, he does not face any charges of sexual misconduct.

The arrests are seen as the strongest response by British authorities since the release of more than 3 million pages of documents related to the Epstein case. Meanwhile, no arrests have been reported in the United States and other countries, although several countries have launched investigations or brought charges against officials suspected of having links to the financier.

Mandelson has held senior positions in previous Labour governments and served as the UK's ambassador to Washington until September, when Prime Minister Keir Starmer sacked him. The decision came after the publication of emails showing he had maintained a friendly relationship with Epstein even after the latter's conviction in 2008 for sex offences involving a minor.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details about the progress of the case.
