Portugal's Interior Minister, Maria Lucia Amaral, has resigned following criticism of her handling of the flood situation.
The statement issued by the Presidency said that Amaral “lacked the personal and political conditions necessary to carry out her duties.” Her post will be temporarily held by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
Montenegro's government has been heavily criticized for its response to two weeks of storms and strong winds that killed at least seven people and caused about 4 billion euros in damage.
Portugal is in a state of emergency until mid-February due to high levels of rainfall and flooding.
