Conservative activist Charlie Kirk has died. Kirk was shot in the neck during an event he was holding in Utah and was rushed to the hospital, where despite the help of doctors, he was unable to survive his injuries.
The news of his death was also confirmed by President Donald Trump, who, through a post on the social network "TruthSocial", announced that conservative activist Charlie Kirk had passed away.
"The Great, even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Young in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my condolences go out to his beautiful wife Erika and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
There are currently no suspects in custody for the shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, despite the school previously saying police had someone in custody.
UVU spokeswoman Ellen Treanor also told CNN in a statement that there are no suspects in custody.
" The campus is closed and classes are canceled until further notice. We are asking those still on campus to stay put until police officers can safely escort them off campus ," Treanor said.
Kirk, who was invited by a group of students, was speaking Wednesday afternoon when a gunman opened fire from a campus building about 200 yards away from Kirk, a spokesman told CNN.
Seconds before Charlie Kirk was shot, he was heard on video answering a question about transgender mass murderers in America.
Excerpts from Kirk's conversation before he was killed:
Audience member: “Do you know how many transgender Americans have been perpetrators of mass murders over the last 10 years?”
Kirk : “A lot.”
The same audience member continued to say that the number is five, and went on to ask if Kirk knew how many mass murderers there have been in America over the past 10 years.
Kirk : “To count or not to count gang violence?”
Seconds later, a crack is heard and the crowd screams as Kirk is shot.
The Utah event was part of a tour: Kirk frequently travels to college campuses, speaking and answering questions from audience members in exchanges that often lead to viral videos. Kirk's appearance at Utah Valley University today was the first of a 14-city Fall Homecoming American Tour, which featured Kirk's signature "prove me wrong" line-up, where Kirk would challenge those who disagreed with him to debate an issue.
