Ukrainian forces have allegedly destroyed a rare Russian radar connected to the latest S-500 "Prometheus" air and missile defense system.
As reported by the Ukrainian military portal Militari, citing data from the open-source intelligence community CyberBoroshno, drone attacks by the "Primary" special forces have occurred against radar installations in Russian-occupied Crimea.
Footage of the Ukrainian offensive has been published by the Military Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, according to Defense Blog.
"Yesterday's GUR footage caught our attention because it claimed that the 96L6 radar from the S-400 system had been destroyed, but in fact it was not that radar," CyberBoroshna analysts reported. "By analyzing the visual characteristics of the target, we determined that it was the latest 98L6 'Yenisei' radar, which is the standard radar for the S-500 'Prometheus' system," it further explained.
"Yenisei" - the newest radar in the Russian arsenal
State tests of the 98L6 "Yenisei" radar were conducted between 2020 and 2021, and according to open sources, it was officially put into operational use in April 2021.
Russian sources claim that the radar is equipped with an active multi-element phased array antenna (AESA), resistant to electronic jamming. It can detect and track aerodynamic and ballistic targets at ranges of up to 600 kilometers and altitudes of up to 100 kilometers. Target data is transmitted to the command center for coordination with other air defense elements.
In appearance, the Yenisei resembles the older 96L6E radar. Both are mounted on a four-axle MZKT truck and have a similar equipment layout - with a rotating antenna and a container with electronic systems on the rear platform of the vehicle. The main difference lies in the design of the antenna: in the 96L6E model, the antenna is divided into two asymmetrical sections.
The Yenisei radar can operate in 360-degree surveillance mode, as well as in narrow-sector targeting, which improves the detection of ballistic targets. This radar is a standard component of the Russian S-500 system, which is considered the most advanced air and missile defense system in the Russian arsenal.
CyberBoroshno states that the Yenisei radar in Crimea was deployed alongside the S-400 system, and analysts are now trying to determine the exact coordinates of the attack to confirm which radar system it was operationally connected to at the time of the destruction.
If confirmed to be the 98L6 radar, its loss represents the first documented battlefield loss of an element associated with the Russian S-500 system.
This system is designed to intercept advanced ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons and other high-energy aerial threats.
