Keaton's Beach in Florida's Big Bend has been affected by severe weather following Hurricane Idalia. The hurricane is considered a category three and has forced millions of residents to abandon their homes and evacuate to shelters. More than 75 people have been rescued from the floods in St. Petersburg, said various reporters on the X social media platform.
Authorities in Florida were still trying to assess damage in the worst-hit areas, while evacuations were still underway in south Georgia. A video released shows rescuers in a small boat traveling through a flooded neighborhood in heavy rains, Reuters reports.
Favored by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Idalia unleashed damaging winds and torrential rain that was predicted to cause flooding up to 5 feet deep along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Earlier, officials and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned residents of the affected areas to shelter in place and take special care of downed power lines. According to statistics from PowerOutage.us, the number of people without power in Florida has risen to nearly 265,000 as of 0942 local time. Data shows that a significant portion of Florida's Big Bend area population is without power.
