Wishing Putin's death on Christmas, Moscow responds to Zelensky
Peskov-Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's Christmas message has sparked a strong reaction in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Zelensky's comments "inappropriate and disturbing," raising doubts about his ability to make decisions that lead to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. In his speech, Zelensky said that "we all have one dream: to die," referring without naming Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, Russia has confirmed that it has had communications with close associates of Donald Trump in the US, but Peskov clarified that “no solution to the war is on the horizon.” The Russian Foreign Ministry has also denied Bloomberg reports that the Kremlin has demanded changes to the US peace plan, while according to the New York Times, Moscow is expected to reject the latest version presented by Zelensky, which envisages the creation of a demilitarized zone in Donbas.

Analysts say Russia is formally maintaining the negotiating table to avoid international responsibility and deter new economic sanctions. But the real goal is to deepen the rift between Kiev and its Western allies.

In his Christmas message, Zelensky stressed that, despite the suffering, Russia “cannot conquer what matters most to us: the Ukrainian heart and unity.” He added that all Ukrainians share a dream of peace, while thanking soldiers on the front lines and praying for the return of those missing and displaced by the war.

Ukraine this year for the third time in a row celebrated Christmas on December 25, according to the Western calendar, definitively distancing itself from the tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church that celebrates on January 7.
