A powerful explosion rocked the city of Thessaloniki in the early hours of Thursday morning, December 25, Christmas Day. The target of the attack was a bank branch in the Evosmi area, where an explosive device placed near the building caused extensive material damage and panic among local residents.
The incident occurred at around 03:20 in the morning, near a bank branch at the intersection of Karoli and Dimitriu streets with Salaminos street. According to preliminary data, the explosive device was placed not directly at the ATM, but at a certain distance from the bank entrance, excluding the possibility of a robbery attack.
The explosion was so powerful that the building's windows were shattered, its interior suffered serious damage, while at least seven vehicles parked nearby were severely damaged. In addition, windows and facades of surrounding homes and shops were damaged by the force of the blast wave.
Greek authorities had not received any warning of the event, while the explosive device was felt over a wide area. A specialized explosive device disposal unit (TEEM) immediately arrived at the scene and began investigations to determine the type of explosive device and how it was installed.
The Department of the Fight against Organized Crime has taken over the file, while Anti-Terrorism agents have also arrived on the scene, who are analyzing footage from security cameras in the area to identify the people who may have planted the vehicle.
Sources from the Greek portal voria.gr report that the characteristics of the device and the way it was placed lead to the conclusion that we are dealing with a professionally organized act, with a well-defined objective.
One lead being investigated is the connection of this event to a previous explosion that occurred in May of this year at another branch of the same bank in central Thessaloniki, where a 38-year-old woman who is believed to have planted the explosive device lost her life.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the incident, while authorities remain on full alert to identify the perpetrators and motives of this shocking event.
