The US military carried out airstrikes on three suspected drug trafficking ships in the eastern Pacific Ocean yesterday, killing eight people.
According to Southern Command, the operation took place under the direction of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, in international waters by Joint Task Force Southern Spear.
"Intelligence confirmed that the ships were transiting along known trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and were involved in drug trafficking. A total of eight male narco-terrorists were killed during these actions, three on the first ship, two on the second, and three on the third ," said the US social media company "X".
At least 95 people have been killed so far in attacks on suspected drug ships as part of a campaign, dubbed Operation Southern Spear, that the Trump administration has said aims to curb narcotics trafficking.
The attacks are part of a months-long pressure campaign on Venezuela, which has included the deployment of thousands of troops and an aircraft carrier strike group to the Caribbean, as well as repeated threats against President Nicolas Maduro.
Last week, the US announced new sanctions on shipping companies and ships it says help transport Venezuelan oil, a day after seizing a sanctioned tanker off the country's coast.
