Israeli tanks are advancing deeper into residential areas of Gaza City, while local health authorities say they are unable to respond to dozens of desperate calls, raising concerns about the fate of civilians in the affected areas.
Witnesses and health workers say Israeli tanks have deepened their raids on the Sabra, Tel Al-Hawa, Sheikh Radwan and Al Nasser neighborhoods, approaching the center and western areas of Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands of people have taken shelter.
Hamas, which claims Israeli sovereignty, said it had received no new proposals from negotiators, after US President Donald Trump said "a deal for Gaza" seemed possible.
The US president is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday. In addition, a spokesman for the US embassy in Israel said that Ambassador Mike Huckabee will travel to Egypt to meet with Egyptian officials “as part of regular diplomatic consultations between US embassies in the region.”
Egypt is among the countries mediating between Israel and Hamas. Last night, emergency services in Gaza said Israel had rejected 73 requests, sent through international organizations, to rescue wounded Palestinians in Gaza City. Israeli authorities have not yet commented.
Earlier, the Israeli military said its forces were expanding operations in the city and that five militants who fired an anti-tank rocket at Israeli troops were killed by the Israeli air force.
The World Food Program estimates that 350,000 to 400,000 Palestinians have fled Gaza City since last month, although hundreds of thousands remain there. The Israeli military estimates that about a million Palestinians were in Gaza City in August.
Israeli forces have killed more than 66,000 Palestinians in the enclave, according to health authorities, displaced the entire population and destroyed Gaza's health system.
