Former US President Barack Obama has sharply criticized Israel's continued military action in Gaza, stating that further bombing no longer has a military justification and calling for a solution that includes Palestinian statehood.
"There is no military reason to continue to bomb what is already a ruin," Obama said at a public event in Dublin. He stressed the urgency of stopping the death of children from starvation and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Obama urged the international community to support a two-state solution, with Palestine enjoying autonomy and living side by side with a secure Israel. He criticized political leaders who he said had an interest in perpetuating the "us versus them" divide, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The prime minister of Israel and I, who is still there, were not the best of friends," Obama said, citing the tensions that have characterized their relationship during his time in office.
However, he also denounced Hamas' actions, calling them "the height of cynicism."
Meanwhile, Netanyahu has reacted sharply to the recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by several Western countries, accusing international leaders of succumbing to "pressure from biased media" and "radical Islamic electorates."
The situation in Gaza continues to escalate. According to the UN, more than 600,000 Palestinians have been displaced from Gaza City since Israel launched its ground offensive earlier this month. The Israeli plan to occupy the city has been described as a major risk to more than a million residents.
In a parallel development, the Trump administration has presented a 21-point peace plan to end the conflict. President Trump, who has also expressed displeasure with Netanyahu, said he will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.
