Alexey Navalny, the dissident and political enemy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, spent the last years of his life behind bars, but still managed to stay connected to the outside world, writes "Business Insider".
Letters from the last months of his life, obtained by The New York Times, showed that Navalny, imprisoned since January 2021, managed to stay informed on current events, including those in the US.
In a letter sent to a friend, photographer Evgeny Feldman, Navalny called former President Donald Trump's agenda for a second term "truly scary."
If President Joe Biden has a health problem, " Trump will become president, " Navalny continued, adding, "Doesn't that clearly worry the Democrats?"
In another letter to Feldman, dated December 3, Navalny again expressed concern about Trump and asked his friend: "Please name a current politician you admire."
On December 6, Navalny "disappeared" from IK-6 prison 120 miles east of Moscow. He reappeared on Christmas Day when his lawyers announced they had found him in IK-3 prison, 1,000 miles northeast of Moscow, above the Arctic Circle.
The Times reported that Navalny's communication from his new prison had been greatly reduced.
Journalist Sergei Parkhomenko received a letter from Navalny on February 13, days before his death was announced. In the letter, which Parkhomenko shared on Facebook, Navalny talked about books and said he only had access to classics in his new prison.
"Who could have told me that Chekhov is the most depressing Russian writer?" , Navalny wrote.
Trump, for his part, did not mention Navalny's death, despite statements from other leaders directly blaming Putin.
In a post on Social Truth on Monday, Trump briefly mentioned Navalny before directing his anger at political opponents: “The sudden death of Alexei Navalny has made me all the more aware of what is happening in our country. Steady progress, with leftist, crooked, radical leftist politicians, prosecutors and judges leading us down the road to destruction . "
He did not mention Russia or Putin.
