After nearly two years of fighting in Ukraine, there are signs that the Armed Forces' capabilities on the ground are weakening. This is not only affecting the "special operation", as Russia calls the war in Ukraine, but also the trust of the Russian public in the military.
Thus, while in the first months of the operations 80% of citizens had expressed their trust in the Armed Forces, last summer the percentage dropped.
Three out of four Russians (75%) now trust the military, the same as in 2014, when Crimea was annexed.
And while the Armed Forces are losing ground, the confidence of Russians, according to the American polling company Gallup, is being gained in the police, financial institutions and the judicial system.

The root of Russians' declining confidence in the military may lie with those who question the political leadership. Thus, as can be seen from the "curves" in the graph below, although from 2006 to 2018 the percentages of trust in the military by citizens who approved or disapproved of the political leadership fluctuated equally, in recent years this picture has changed .
