Viktor Orban accuses EU leaders: They want to overthrow the Hungarian government

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed on Friday that European Union leaders intend to "bring down" his government.

"The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber, the President of the European People's Parties have announced that they seek to overthrow the Hungarian government. They have declared that they want another government. They have also expressed who should govern in the future, so to speak, a government friendly to Brussels, because this sovereign government is not good for them. They have declared it openly. I have known this for a long time. You don't have to be a Nobel laureate to understand that," he said, speaking to Hungarian state media on Friday.

The Hungarian prime minister is facing growing isolation from the European Union over his stance on the war in Ukraine and allegations that during his 14-year rule, the government has consistently curtailed the principles and rights that guarantee a democratic state.

"Brussels wants to delegate a socialist and a member of the People's Party to the next Hungarian government, which would support the most important objectives of Brussels, which are the cause of the conflicts now," said Mr. Orban.

Prime Minister Orban has long been at odds with the EU over what the European bloc sees as curbs on democratic rights in Hungary, and he has been increasingly criticized for close ties to autocracies such as Russia and China.

Two years ago, the European Parliament declared that Hungary under the leadership of Viktor Orban had turned into "a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy", taking it out of the community of democracies./ VOA
