Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, hit back at criticism over his country's offer to gift a $400 million Boeing 747-8 jet to US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Fox News, he said that the agreement was between two governments, not a personal gift.
"First of all, we bought this plane from an American company. It's basically part of a collaboration that we've done a lot together between Qatar and the United States. Unfortunately, I see this story taking a different direction and becoming more politicized, while it's a normal government-to-government agreement," said Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar.
The delivery of the plane, which Trump has said could be used as Air Force One, has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats and raised alarm among some Republicans in Congress. Critics have called it an illegal foreign donation and a national security risk. Trump, for his part, dismissed the backlash, calling the rejection of the plane “stupid.”
"We are not going to do anything illegal. If there is something illegal here, there would be many ways to hide these types of transactions that will not be visible to the public. This is a very clear exchange that is happening between the two governments. I do not see any controversy here," said Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar.
Experts say converting the plane into Air Force One will potentially cost hundreds of millions of dollars, including work on high-level security, communications and defense capabilities.
