Greece polls, low turnout favors Mitsotakis' New Democracy

Greeks headed to the polls again on Sunday morning in an attempt to elect a government for the second time in just over a month.

After the May 21 elections held under the system of simple proportional representation, this vote is carried out under the system of enhanced proportionality, which means that the winning party will be given a bonus of 20 to 50 mandates.

It gets 20 full seats if it gets at least 25% of the vote and can get up to 50 seats if it gets around 40% of the vote. Parties must secure at least 3% of the vote to enter Parliament for a 4-year term.

The turnout in the election is currently lower than in the May vote. "The rate of participation in the elections was 29.13% until 1:30 p.m.," the Ministry of the Interior announced, adding that it had received figures from 18,794 polling stations, or approximately 87% of the total.

The highest turnout rates were recorded in Heraklion, Crete, followed by Fthiodita, Central Greece, the second electoral area of Thessaloniki, the northern Athens sector, Eastern Attica and Larissa in Central Greece. The lowest participation rates were observed in Folloria, Northern Greece, the island of Kefalonia, Evritania, Lakonia and the island of Lefkada.

The process is going smoothly, the ministry said, adding that the next and final update on the participation rate will be announced at 5:00 p.m.

The ministry also said the turnout rate among Greeks abroad, who voted the day before, reached 70 percent, up from 79.6 percent voter turnout in the May 21 election.
