The White House has responded to the incident that occurred in the early hours of the morning, where a 20-year-old man was shot and killed after entering the security perimeter of President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach.
In a statement to the media, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said the Secret Service acted "swiftly and decisively" to neutralize the person, who was armed and carrying a shotgun and a fuel can.
"In the middle of the night, while most Americans were asleep, the United States Secret Service acted quickly and decisively to neutralize a deranged individual, armed with a gun and a gas canister, who forced his way into President Trump's home," said Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary.
According to local authorities, the young man managed to drive into the north gate of the residence, taking advantage of the moment when another vehicle was leaving the secured area. After being confronted by officers on the scene, he allegedly refused orders to surrender.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said officers asked him to drop his belongings. He initially lowered the gas canister, but then pointed the gun at them, prompting officers to fire their weapons.
Investigators are analyzing body camera footage to determine exactly how the final seconds of the collision unfolded.
The victim's identity was not immediately released, while authorities are working to determine the motive for the act.
