Donald Trump was in Washington, D.C. this week, far from his Mar-a-Lago estate where the shooting incident occurred. Although the president was not there, security at the residence remains tight.
Security at the property is extremely tight, with an external cordon of local Palm Beach sheriffs and an internal one maintained by the Secret Service. Visitors are searched, and cars and bags are checked by dogs and metal detectors.
While the details of the incident are still unclear, the tight security measures may help explain why the gunman was quickly stopped from further into the property.
Even when Trump and his personal security team are not at home, security is maintained. Regular clients at Mar-a-Lago include prominent Republican figures and wealthy business leaders.
There are still many unanswered questions about the suspect and his possible motives. But the incident will almost certainly raise concerns about political violence in the US, as have other incidents, such as the two attempts on Trump's life and the shooting of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk.
