A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could take place within three weeks, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News, stressing that Washington is pushing forward a package of proposals to bring the parties closer to negotiations.
According to Witkoff, the United States has presented concrete ideas to both Moscow and Kiev and expects these initiatives to create the conditions for a direct meeting between the two leaders. He left open the possibility that future developments could lead to a Putin-Zelenskyy summit.
Speaking about the conflict, which is approaching its fourth year, Witkoff called it “a futile war.” “What dignity does it give you when there is so much killing?” he said, adding that recent rounds of US-brokered talks have produced positive signals in some directions.
Witkoff argued that neither Russia nor Ukraine "seems like they really want to fight each other," while emphasizing that the main obstacle to reaching an agreement lies at the level of political leadership.
He also announced that, together with Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and unofficial advisor, they have put ideas on the table that aim to create a common ground for negotiations. He added that there is also the possibility of Trump's involvement in a possible meeting, but only if he is convinced of a concrete outcome.
Commenting on his visits to Russia, Witkoff said that President Putin has been "direct" about Moscow's red lines and reasons. According to him, to reach an agreement it is essential to understand the position of each side.
His statements come after the latest round of trilateral talks on the war in Ukraine, held this week in Geneva, following two previous rounds in Abu Dhabi in late January and early February.
