Who was Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk, one of President Donald Trump's high-profile conservative activists and a trusted media figure, has died at the age of 31 after being shot at a college in Utah.
Kirk was known for his debates on college campuses across the country, where he often confronted students with hot-button topics such as transgender identity, climate change, faith, and family values.
In 2012, at just 18 years old, he co-founded the student organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA), which aimed to spread conservative ideals on American universities, which were largely perceived as liberal. Today, TPUSA has branches at more than 850 colleges and universities.
Born into a wealthy family in Prospect Heights, a suburb of Chicago, Kirk was the son of an architect.
He decided to devote himself entirely to political activism. After unsuccessfully applying to the elite military academy at West Point, he often joked about the fact that he didn't have a college degree while debating deep topics like postmodernism.
After Barack Obama's re-election in 2012, Kirk's role in TPUSA took off. He traveled across America speaking at Republican events, particularly favored by the ultra-conservative Tea Party movement.
A fiery orator, he also spoke at the Oxford Union this year and in 2020 published the best-selling book The Maga Doctrine. TPUSA played a crucial role in mobilizing voters for Trump and the Republicans in the last election, as a key factor in registering tens of thousands of new voters and swinging Arizona in Trump’s favor.
Kirk attended Trump's inauguration in Washington in January and was a regular visitor to the White House during both of his presidential terms. The president himself praised him for his ability and connections to the Make America Great Again grassroots movement.
He spoke at several Republican conventions, and last year Trump rewarded him with a keynote speech at a Turning Point conference in Arizona. Earlier this year, Kirk traveled with Donald Trump Jr. to Greenland, as Trump floated the idea that the US should own the Arctic.
In his politics, Kirk always put his Christian faith and family at the center, was married to a former Miss, with whom he has two children. For many, he was seen as the future of conservative activism, but also as a polarizing figure.
