The killing of Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut on Tuesday has interrupted talks with Hamas on the release of hostages, two senior administration officials told the American NBC News network.
However, one of the officials noted that the militant group currently has no incentive to release the remaining captives, since if they do so during a ceasefire, Israel will resume their bombing.
There was a framework for a deal, but no agreement was reached last month during high-level talks in Warsaw between a senior US official, Qatari representatives for Hamas and the head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who arrived in Doha today, said he would talk to officials in Qatar and other countries about efforts to bring the US and other hostages home.
