The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said late Sunday that he had a telephone conversation with the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.
"I just finished a conversation with the newly elected American president, Donald Trump. The conversation was excellent, content, and I would say very cordial ," said Vucic on Instagram.
He said he feels "grateful" to Trump that he "immediately knew a lot about Serbia."
" I expressed my hope that he will visit Serbia, as Serbia was the country where the support for the election of President Trump was the greatest in all of Europe ," he said.
He emphasized that Trump "thanked him for the great support" he received from "the citizens of Serbia, from the Serbian people, and I believe that in the coming period we will have the opportunity to talk about the further improvement of our relations, in all areas ".
" I am sure that, with the support of our friends - and by friends I mean the entire circle of President Trump, who were also with him during the conversation tonight - we will be able to make America great, and Serbia a country worthy, that can cooperate very well with the United States ," said Vucic.
Vucic was among the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his victory. The Serbian president even wished him back to the White House before it was officially announced that the former president had won early on November 5.
During the years that the US administration has been led by Democratic President Joe Biden, Serbia and its political leaders have continued to maintain close relations with the former US envoy for the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina during the administration of former President Donald Trump, Richard Grenell.
The President of Serbia presented him with a state decoration in October 2023 and on that occasion assessed that Grenell's role in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina "has not only contributed to regional peace and stability, but has also played a key role in strengthening of relations between the USA and Serbia".
Grenell is still active in Trump's presidential campaign.
Meanwhile, Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has invested in the former General Staff building in Belgrade.
Serbia has signed a contract with Kushner's firm for the "revitalization" of the General Staff complex in downtown Belgrade, which was partially destroyed during the NATO bombing in 1999.
On the site of the ruins from the bombing, the construction of two high-rise buildings with apartments and hotels is planned, although this object, built between 1955 and 1965, has not been removed from the protection status as a cultural asset.
Many observers of the Balkans have seen the agreement with Kushner as Serbia's preparation for Trump's possible return to the White House.
Also, during the first Trump administration, Kosovo and Serbia reached an agreement on the normalization of economic relations, but most of its points remained unimplemented.
In that administration, there were also officials who spoke about the exchange of territories between Kosovo and Serbia - as an opportunity to resolve disputes between them - but also about the withdrawal of American troops from Kosovo./ REL
