Special Counsel Jack Smith, press conference, Friday, June 9, in Washington, DC

The special prosecutor, Jack Smith, held a press conference after the disclosure of the indictment against former president Donald Trump and one of his aides.

He urged Americans to read the indictment against former President Trump, as he added that there are laws protecting national defense information that are critical to the security of the United States and that they must be enforced.

" I invite everyone to read it in its entirety to understand the scope and gravity of the crimes charged. We have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone. This is what determines the outcome of an investigation. Nothing more and nothing less. Our nation's commitment to the rule of law sets an example to the world. We have a set of laws in this country and they apply to everybody ," Smith said, adding that his office enforced those laws and gathered facts during the course of the investigation.

Smith also praised prosecutors in his office and said the defendants in the case are presumed innocent until proven guilty, adding that his office will seek a speedy trial.

" They have investigated this case to the highest ethical standards and will continue to do so as the case continues. It is very important for me to emphasize that the defendants in this case must be presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court. To that end, my office will seek a speedy trial on this matter, consistent with the public interest and the rights of the accused ," he said.

Former President Donald Trump is accused of showing classified documents to unauthorized people on two occasions and of possessing secret documents without permission. He faces a total of 37 charges, including 31 counts of intentionally withholding national defense information. In total, if convicted, he risks up to 20 years in prison.
