The criminal trial of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, is expected to begin on June 1, 2027, in the United States.
Maduro and Flores were arrested in early January at their residence in Caracas, during an operation by US forces, which was accompanied by an exchange of fire with Venezuelan security forces.
The former president faces four felony charges, including conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism and cocaine importation. If convicted, he faces life in prison. Both have pleaded not guilty and are being held at the Metropolitan Federal Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Before the trial begins, Maduro is expected to ask for the charges to be dropped. During his appearance in court on January 5, he described himself as a "prisoner of war."
The United States considers Maduro a corrupt dictator and has not recognized him as the legitimate president of Venezuela since 2019.
After his arrest, the country was led by former Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who has developed closer relations with the Trump administration. Meanwhile, the US has eased sanctions on the Venezuelan oil industry, encouraging foreign companies to expand investment in the oil and gas sector.
