Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in the United States for a scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday.
After the tense last meeting in the Oval Office in February, critics appeared to suggest the Ukrainian president opt for a more serious outfit, emphasizing the importance of the historic diplomatic moment.
Zelensky was not invited to the summit between Trump and Putin in Alaska on Friday, where the leaders failed to agree on a ceasefire or peace deal for Ukraine.
However, the Ukrainian president reported that he had a long and substantive conversation with Trump early Saturday, where they discussed steps to stop the killings and end the war. The meeting scheduled for Monday is expected to address all the details on critical issues of the conflict.
Donald Trump has put pressure on Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of talks in Washington with European leaders on Monday, saying the Ukrainian leader could end the war "almost immediately" if he wanted to.
The US president also ruled out allowing Ukraine to join NATO or retake Russian-occupied Crimea as part of negotiations with Moscow.
Trump posted the comments on his Truth Social platform on Sunday evening, hours before he meets with the leaders of Britain, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the EU and NATO in the Oval Office, amid fears that the US president may try to pressure Kiev to accept a solution favorable to Moscow.
"President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants, or he can continue to fight," Trump tweeted. "There is no going back on Obama giving him Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and no joining NATO by Ukraine. Some things never change!!!" he added.
