Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is visiting Turkey on March 8 to talk with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, about the fight against Russia, defense cooperation and the security of Ukrainian food exports.
The Ukrainian presidency said the two leaders would also discuss Kiev's 10-point peace formula aimed at ending the conflict, but also the release of all Ukrainian detainees and deportees, as well as ensuring food stability. world through the safe transit of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.
Ukraine's peace formula calls for the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine, the restoration of the state's 1991 borders after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and holding Russia accountable for its actions. Earlier, the Kremlin has rejected such requests.
"A special attention during the visit will be given to joint projects in the sphere of defense and industry," the Ukrainian Presidency said in a Telegram announcement, adding that Zelensky will visit a shipyard where parts for the Ukrainian Navy are being built. He will also meet with representatives of Turkish defense companies.
The Turkish presidency said that the talks will also include "detailed discussions on the course of the Ukraine-Russia war, on the current situation regarding the continuing agreement on the grain corridor [in the Black Sea] and efforts for a lasting peace in the region." .
Turkey, a NATO member state, has maintained good relations with Moscow and Kiev and, together with the United Nations, brokered an agreement that allowed Kiev to safely export grain from its ports. But last July Russia pulled out of the deal, known as the Black Sea Initiative, after arguing that its food and fertilizer exports did not enjoy the same conditions.
Turkey has aimed to persuade Moscow to return to the deal, but so far Russia has refused.
After the meeting on Friday afternoon, Erdogan and Zelensky will hold a press conference.
