A group of MEPs have sent a letter to EC and EU officials asking them not to recognize the results of the elections in Serbia.
MEPs demand an international investigation into the Serbian parliamentary, provincial and local elections that were overseen by the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
The letter was written by members of the European Parliament from the European People's Party, the Greens and the Social Democrats, who sent it to the President of the European Commission, the Commissioner for Enlargement and the EU High Representative for Integration and Security Policies.
MEPs also demand that the election results be withheld until a full and independent investigation is carried out.
"We remain in support of the citizens of Serbia who are protesting for their opportunity to exercise their democratic rights, as well as for Serbia's membership in the European Union. "Unfortunately, the serious accusations related to the last elections are not in accordance with democratic standards and violate this goal", the letter of the MEPs states.
The letter states that some of the findings include allegations of vote-buying, abuse of public funds, forged signatures of support on electoral rolls, disproportionate government influence on the media, serious and well-planned voter roll manipulations and voter migration, including neighboring countries, as well as pressuring welfare recipients and state-owned enterprise workers to vote for the ruling party in order to keep their jobs and benefits.
"Several international and local observation missions have concluded that the elections in Serbia cannot be considered free and fair and have found evidence of irregularities and open electoral fraud. The KRRT observation mission has also expressed concern about the local elections in the city of Belgrade", concludes the letter of the MEPs.
