Malnutrition and insecurity in Gaza, WHO raises the alarm: Over 500 thousand

The representative of Palestine at the World Health Organization (WHO), Rik Peeperkorn, stated that they are extremely concerned about the malnutrition in Gaza.

Peeperkorn participated in the weekly media briefing of the UN Office in Geneva online and gave an assessment of the situation in Gaza. According to him, 13 of the 36 hospitals in Gaza provide partial service.

" 8,000 people in Gaza need medical evacuation, 6,000 of whom are wounded in the war and 2,000 of whom have other medical conditions ," Peeperkorn said.

He drew attention to the food crisis in Gaza, as he emphasized that no one is safe from extreme hunger.

" We are extremely concerned about malnutrition in Gaza. Acute food insecurity in Gaza is at unprecedented levels in recent history. No one is safe because of the extreme hunger in Gaza. More than half a million people in Gaza face 'catastrophic' hunger conditions, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the most reliable analysis of food security. IPC warned of shortages if current conditions continue ," said Peeperkorn.

He stressed that the risk of disease has increased even more in the Gaza Strip, which has been suffering from food shortages, and reiterated the UN's call for the lifting of restrictions on aid to Gaza and obstacles to the distribution of aid.
