By 5:00 p.m., 74.23 percent of citizens had headed to the polling stations, a historic turnout in Hungary's elections.

Hungarians are voting today to choose their new prime minister. The election has shown a massive voter turnout in a parliamentary election that could change the country's political landscape after 16 years of Viktor Orbán's rule.

According to the latest official data from the National Election Office (NVI), by 17:00, 74.23 percent of eligible voters had gone to the polling stations. This is a historic record compared to previous elections.

This means an increase of more than 11 percentage points compared to 2022. Analysts had predicted a high turnout, but today's figure exceeded most expectations. The elections of April 12, 2026 are considered one of the most important in Hungary's recent history.

They could decide whether Viktor Orbán's Fidesz-KDNP will continue to govern or whether the opposition (especially the Tisza party led by Péter Magyar) will achieve a major political change. Voting continues until 19:00, when polling stations close. Counting of votes begins immediately after the polls close and the first results are expected in the evening.

The high turnout shows an extraordinary interest of citizens in the future of the country, especially at a time of great political tensions within the country and in the international arena.
