Banned access to "Instagram" in Turkey, Erdogan reacts: Digital

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has accused social networks of digital fascism.

The Turkish leader's comments come as Turkish officials are in discussions with representatives of the Instagram platform to restore access to Turkish territory.

Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority blocked access to the popular social media app on Friday morning without giving a reason for the decision.

The decision came after Turkish Government Communications Chief Fahrettin Altun criticized Instagram for allegedly blocking condolence posts on the death of the Hamas leader, who was killed in a pre-dawn airstrike in Tehran, Iran last week.

Turkey does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization. Erdogan has described the group as a liberation movement and criticized Israel's military operations in Gaza.

The president said that social media platforms behave like a mafia and said that they could not even "tolerate photos of Palestinian martyrs".

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu confirmed Turkish authorities had met with representatives of the Instagram company last week and held a new round of talks, but without reaching a solution.
