A massive wildfire that appears to be out of control has engulfed southern France. It is about an area of 16,000 hectares that has been under the power of the flames in the last 24 hours, which are destroying the Corbières mountain range.
A woman in her sixties was found dead in her home, another person is missing and 9 others have been injured.
In videos shot by firefighters, clouds of smoke have transformed the landscape. Red and purple flames surround the streets and appear to be carried by a strong wind.
Some 1,900 firefighters with 500 vehicles are making a superhuman effort to control the huge forest fire that has already destroyed an area larger than Paris, as the flames spread rapidly through forests and villages, forcing residents and tourists to flee the area.

Many roads in the area are closed.
So far, 14,000 hectares have burned, an area similar to that burned across all of France in 2024 and more than double the area affected by forest fires in 2023.
The prefecture said the fire was moving "very quickly" and that nearly 2,000 firefighters were trying to put it out.
About 2,500 families in the area are currently without electricity, he added.
Officials and experts warned that the wind could change direction, further complicating efforts to fight the fire.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched to determine the causes of this major fire, the Carcassonne prosecutor's office announced early this afternoon.
