North-South divide, Sali Berisha's last attempt
Sali Berisha /

Albanians did not vote for Rilindja, but against the ghost that has divided them for three decades. Edi Rama won because he faced an unsettled past...

The May 11th votes were not elections. They were neither hope for new things, nor an assessment of a governing program. They were revolt; a vote of punishment, filled with the anger that comes from 30 years of political failure. They were a clear voice that said: "No more division, no more Berisha."

Edi Rama did not win because he had governed well. He did not win because Albanians trusted him with another mandate. He won because he faced a symbol of hatred, an architect of national division, a man who for decades has cut Albanians with a rusty knife: North against South and South against North, old against young, fanatics against independents.

Berisha's program was not a program. It was revenge packaged as justice. A voice that still rings like a dirge over the grave, reminding this people not just of a political crisis, but of a real civil war, with 4,000 dead and wounds that have never healed.

You cannot seek to come to power with the balance of 1997 on your shoulders. You cannot sell yourself as a victim, when you are the author of the greatest national division after 1990. The Albanian people did not forget. And when the day came to choose, they did not choose who they loved the most, but who they hated the least.

Edi Rama is covered in corruption charges. You know it. Albania knows it. He steals more than he governs. But in a country where people still remember the umbrellas, the tricolors, the phone calls to seize power, he seems less dangerous than Berisha.

And this is the greatest punishment that can be inflicted on a man who was once seen as a leader: to become the greatest terror of hope.

In the SOUTH, the vote was massive. Not for Rama. But against Berisha. Southerners no longer have any illusions that Saliu's PD can be an alternative. They see it as a dangerous relic. An era that refuses to die. A ghost that wanders with the sword of the vote and the shield of hatred.

Because of Saliu, Albania will have a "king" for another 4 years. Not because Rama is a king. But because his opponent is division itself.

If we want to break free from this hopeless cycle, we must admit: the great evil is not only the government, it is also the legacy that is being kept alive with propaganda machinery and primitive savagery.

As long as there are people who believe that Berisha is the salvation, Albania will continue to have a Rama as a king over ruins./ Pamphlet
