Erion Veliaj delivered a cautious message yesterday after 100 days in isolation. He was picked up from the mayor's office, on a February day, by a BKH agent. He does not play the victim, but he is clear: he will follow the legal channels and will contest the charges. And until his guilt or innocence is proven, he has the right to speak as such.
But what is beyond the file is the political reality. Because in this story, it is not SPAK that hit Veliaj, but Edi Rama. In the history of the Sultans, there comes a moment when the eldest son, the most popular, the most liked by the "janissaries", must be killed. Because for the Sultan, the throne is more important than blood.
As Sultan Suleiman did with Mustafa. As Erdogan did with Davutoglu. So did Edi Rama with Erion Veliaj. Because the creature dared to become a political figure. And this is not forgiven.
Veliaj is not Berisha, he is not Meta. He is not even the weight of an old wing of the system. He is a direct product of Edi Rama, raised by his hand, supported at every step, used to overthrow Fatos Nano, to break Ilir Meta, to calm the internationals.
But the moment he appears as an independent profile, as a man with support in Tirana, with real votes and with ambitions for more, Rama does what every autocrat does: he annihilates him.
Today, all of Veliaj's people are burned. Candidates linked to him did not pass. The municipal administration has been purged of his people. He is no longer the mayor of Tirana, neither de facto nor de jure. His politics have been undone. The network has been dismantled.
Only one name, Fatmir Xhafaj, has survived. And he is there not as Veliaj's legacy, but as Rama's negotiator for the Justice reform.
Blendi Gonxhe received more votes than he needed, breaking the rule that Rama himself established: that candidates only campaign in their own area. This was the engine heating for the municipality. And the signal that the race for Tirana is open, but Veliaj is out of it.
