The aesthetic dictatorship of the man with dark glasses
Edi Rama /

If this is not a dictatorship; then it is the most expensive parody of democracy that Europe has ever financed...

In Serbia, there is an Aleksandar Vučić who controls everything. In Albania, we have an artist who not only gives color, but paints the entire picture of power. We are no longer in the phase of capturing institutions. It has happened. We are in the era of the performance of total control, where everything has the form of democracy but the content of a refined autocracy, in rose-colored colors.

In this new republic, conceived in the mind of one man, Parliament has become an art gallery where MPs are exhibited like silent installations. The government is the cabinet of a single author who writes his own roles and performs them on Instagram. The ministers are puppets without strings, while the opposition is a moral recidivist who offends even the concept of oppositionism.

Edi Rama is no longer simply a prime minister. He is an architect, curator, editor-in-chief, supreme judge and artistic director of Albanian reality. He no longer needs to convince, because everything is now consensual in silence. A silence that stems from fear, servility and comfort.

Every decision is made from above. It is not consulted, not debated, not questioned. It is like a divine decree with electoral signature. The role of the institutions is clear: to cover with legality a personal will that commands the government, parliament, justice, media, civil society and in the meantime sells itself as an international reformer.

This is no longer a deformed democracy. It is an aesthetic dictatorship, dressed up in ironic smiles and hilarious jokes. It is a reality where cynicism has become a method of governance and irony has been replaced by collective self-censorship.

And while citizens have fallen into a long sleep of moral numbness, the only thing that flourishes is propaganda. With beautiful performances, drone events, speeches about the climate, about Europe, about art. Because when reality is sad, the spectacle must be joyful.

This is how the Albanian autocracy of 2025 works: with dark glasses, with television smiles, and with elegant censorship. And above all, with a people who are accustomed to applauding while their voices are being silenced.

If this is not a dictatorship; then it is the most expensive parody of democracy that Europe has ever financed./ Pamphlet
