The Prime Minister was angered when some advisors openly sided with Veliaj, turning his dismissal calculations into a failed coup that is opening wounds within the SP...
Edi Rama is furious with the defense that some councilors made of Erion Veliaj in the Tirana Municipal Council. Two members spoke openly in public, while three others supported him silently. Aldo Merkoçi was the main voice in defense of Veliaj, warned in advance by colleagues about this stance. Alfred Muharremi also came out in the same line. While Joleza Koka and Gaz Paja were absent from the session, and right-wing councilor Fabian Topollaj voted against the decision.
The Rama-Berisha “coalition” to approve Veliaj’s dismissal did not give the prime minister the expected result. He wanted a “clean job”, but in the end everything turned into a political boomerang. Although until yesterday Veliaj was the most attacked by the opposition and the media, after the session the impression was created that the prime minister is undertaking a political coup against the mayor of Tirana.
The unexpected resistance, even under conditions of severe isolation in prison, has produced a core of opposition to Rama, despite threats. The Prime Minister has taken this as a direct challenge to his absolute power.
Symbolic was the case of Luan Bregas, an advisor close to Veliaj, who finally obeyed Rama. Bregas, mired for years in debt with taxes and customs and in legal conflicts over "Tirana Beer", and even with collapsed construction projects in the Paris Municipality, turned his back on Veliaj and aligned himself with Rama.
It is precisely this rebellion that has set the prime minister in motion, who since last night has been meeting with individuals close to Veliaj, bluntly asking them to publicly declare their position. Rama has also compiled lists of suspicious supporters within the Tirana SP, who will be verified in detail.
The Prime Minister has personally taken over the leadership of the Socialist Party in Tirana and the entire campaign, with the aim of purging socialist organizations where Veliaj is suspected of having influence. A move that shows Rama's fear, because in reality most of the local leaders are old socialist militants, connected to MPs and party figures, not brought in by Veliaj.
Despite this, Rama is very worried. He fears that a poor result in Tirana will be interpreted as a personal fiasco. For this reason, he is lobbying for the opposition not to enter the race or at least for the DP not to participate, so that there are no comparative figures. Because the reality is known: on May 11, even though Rama himself ran as the leader of the list in Tirana, he received fewer votes than in 2021 when Erion Veliaj was the political leader./ Pamphlet
