In Albania, an environmental revolt against a luxury tourist project has transformed, in a matter of days, into a national protest against the corruption and arbitrariness of the political system.
The name with which it has been baptized by the international media, “Flamingo Revolution”, reflects quite well the symbolic power of a movement that has chosen a migratory bird as an emblem of the protection of the territory and public dignity.
The spark that ignited the protest was the start of works in a coastal area with high ecological sensitivity, between Sazan and Zvërnec. A major tourist development is planned there, linked to the investment company of the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump – Jared Kushner, husband of Ivanka Trump and founder of “Affinity Partners”.
From that moment on, the protest spread to Tirana, with daily demonstrations in front of the government headquarters, where slogans for environmental protection are combined with denunciation of corruption and rejection of a policy that is seen as disconnected from the common interest.
The use of flamingos as a symbol of the protests goes beyond a purely visual finding. It establishes a strong connection to the contested coastline, which serves as a stopover for these birds during their migration and is home to delicate habitats, protected species and a fragile ecosystem.
The images of pink flamingos inflated with air, homemade banners and Albanian flags gave the movement an immediate image power, easily recognizable even on social networks.
A movement from bottom to top
This symbolic dimension has weighed heavily in a country where protests have often been consumed within traditional party schemes. On the contrary, the flamingo “revolution” showed a different feature from the beginning.
It emerged as a bottom-up, spontaneous mobilization, organized mainly through social networks, able to include students, environmentalists, local residents and professionals. It is precisely this fluid nature that made it more difficult to manage and, at the same time, richer in meaning.
At the center of the story are two large, high-end real estate projects, which are presented as engines of development and employment, but which are seen by protesters as yet another privatization of the landscape in the name of dark interests.
The overall project is worth about $1.4 billion and affects areas of exceptional environmental value on the Albanian Adriatic coast. The government of Prime Minister Edi Rama defends it as part of a strategy to attract capital and strengthen luxury tourism.
But demonstrators insist that the race for investment is taking place at the expense of environmental protection and in a climate where licensing mechanisms favor large operators, especially when they have political connections to the Albanian ruling class.
Thus, the protest, which began as a landscape issue, quickly took the form of a moral referendum on the relationship between power, business, and territory.
All-round distrust
Një nga elementet më rëndësishëm është gjerësia e pakënaqësisë. Manifestuesit nuk kontestojnë vetëm qeverinë në detyrë, por akuzojnë edhe opozitën tradicionale se është pjesë e të njëjtit sistem pushteti dhe se mban të njëjtat përgjegjësi në degradimin gradual të jetës publike.
Ky mosbesim i gjithanshëm ka ushqyer tonet radikale të protestës, e cila nuk kufizohet vetëm në kërkesën për të ndaluar projektin, por kërkon dorëheqje, llogaridhënie dhe një ndryshim të modelit të qeverisjes.
Po ashtu, protestat janë shenjë e një ndjenje të gjerë lodhjeje në vend ndaj një klase politike të mbyllur, vetëreferuese dhe tepër tolerante ndaj praktikave klienteliste. Prandaj, “Revolucioni i flamingove” nuk mund të kalohet thjesht si një lëvizje e radhës mjedisore; ai është përfaqësimi i një brezi dhe i një pjese të shoqërisë shqiptare që refuzon ta pranojë mosbesimin si normalitet.
Dimensioni mjedisor i çështjes përfshiu me shpejtësi edhe Brukselin. Komisioni Evropian ka shprehur shqetësim për respektimin e normave mjedisore dhe ka paralajmëruar se rrugëtimi i anëtarësimit të Shqipërisë në Bashkimin Evropian mund të rrezikohet nëse nuk respektohen standardet e kërkuara.
Ky është një hap vendimtar, sepse e zhvendos protestën nga rrafshi i brendshëm në atë gjeopolitik, duke vendosur në peshore zhvillimin turistik, mbrojtjen e peizazhit dhe kredibilitetin evropian të vendit. Për Tiranën, që synon të përshpejtojë afrimin me BE-në, kjo çështje nuk është dytësore.
Rezervat e Brukselit tregojnë se ambicia evropiane e Shqipërisë varet edhe nga aftësia për të harmonizuar rritjen ekonomike me shtetin e së drejtës në fushën e mjedisit. Me fjalë të tjera, rasti i flamingove është kthyer në një test për cilësinë e qeverisjes shqiptare.
Një model i ri proteste
The wave of mobilization is taking a new form compared to the past. It is not a classic protest led by parties or well-known leaders, but a more horizontal movement, where participation seems to matter more than organizational discipline.
For this reason, the manifestations have continued to grow, with long marches in the evening and a large circulation of images and messages on the Internet. In Albania, where protests are certainly nothing new, what is special lies in the interweaving of two elements: a concrete and immediate cause, such as the protection of a fragile territory, and a broader political demand, which is the end of a system perceived as untouchable by accountability.
It is precisely this combination that gives the “Flamingo Revolution” a weight that goes beyond the specific case. The strength of the protest lies perhaps precisely in its simplicity. It does not just seek to save a lagoon, a beach or a strip of coastline, but calls into question the development model chosen by the country in recent years.
Activists insist that Albania should not be sold to the most important buyer and that tourism, if it wants to be a source of development, must remain in harmony with the landscape, the law and the public interest.
Therefore, the “Flamingo Revolution” should be read simultaneously as a local event, but also as a European story, because it speaks of economic transition, institutional fragility and the political price paid when economic growth appears disconnected from the protection of the common good.
Where this will lead remains to be seen, but it can already be said that in Albania, a protest born to protect flamingos has ended up taking the entire system of power in the land of eagles under indictment.

Cdo gje ne kete vend eshte fasade, eshte boshe eshte sic eshte ky palaco kryeminister qe asnjehere nuk ben ate qe thote. Eshte demagog, as do tia dije fare per kete popull. Rasti i djeshem i SPAK tregoji dhe njehere qe pas ketyre investimeve fshihen parate e droges. Ky drogaxhi ne krye te qeverise duhet te marr ate e meriton duhet te behet shembull. Gjerat behen aq hapur sa dhe nje femije 2 vjec e kupton. I bej thirrje spak te bllokoj urgjentisht punimet ne palase, nje katraure qe po shkaterron gjithe bregdetin, lavatrice e parave te pista me ne krye miliarderin e forbes Samir Muti. Gjithashtu koka e kesaj skeme qelbesira kryeminister duhet te arrestohet ne zyre. Nje shtet prej letre qe dhe pse paguhen institucionet, te gjitha me urdher jane te gjunjezuara para ketyre trafikanteve nderkombetare qe gjejne sheshin e mutit kryeminister e bejne pershesh.

Ich wünsche allen Albanern, dass sie ihre Heimat beschützen und die mafiösen Gestalten in Gefängnisse werfen. Es ist hoch an der Zeit dazu! Lasst euch niemals die eigene Heimat von gierigen Investoren nehmen und die schöne Landschaft ruinieren! Ich war viermal in den letzten Jahren in Albanien und sah von Jahr zu Jahr deutliche Veränderungen, welche bedeuten, dass die traumhafte Küste eines Tages zubetoniert sein wird. Was habt ihr davon? Die einfache Bevölkerung hat nur Nachteile. Ihr müsst immer höhere Mieten bezahlen bzw. immer mehr für Immobilienkäufe. Die Gewinne stecken die Investoren ein und ihr werdet ausgenutzt. Lasst das nicht zu, denn eure Kinder müssen eine gute Zukunft bekommen! Ich wünsche allen viel Erfolg bei dem Protest gegen Rama und Luxus-Ansiedlungen jeder Art! Im September komme ich wieder nach Tirana, Vlora und Himara sowie Sandara und freue mich sehr auf euch und euer tolles Land!

Sepse, mesa lexova, duket qarte se Ai nuk e ka provuar ne lekuren e vet ndjenjen e poshterimit qe ndjen njeriu i pasur materialisht dhe shpirterisht kur puntoret dhe fshataret - per te cilet ai luftoi e skarifikoi deri edhe me arme ne dore kunder pushtuesit te huaj dhe sundimtarit vendas - ne Demokraci fillojne e u tregojne arrat atyre aristokrateve qe shkrine jeten dhe pasurite e tyre me qellim qe te varferit dhe te pasurit te kene, ne Shqiperi, dallime thjeshte relative midis tyre, dhe jo dallime antagoniste... protestuesit e sotem jane bij e bija te ishpuntoreve dhe ishfshatareve te Diktatures, prandaj ajo edhe quhej e Proletariatit... Marco nuk e ka bere universitetin e komunizmit, ne i beme dy univerisitete: komunizmit demokracise, dhe kuptojme shume e me shume dhe thelle e me thelle...Populli thote; i zoti e nxjerr gomarin nga balta....dhe i zoti gomarit eshte Edi Rama me certifikate pronesie nga populli...le te jemi Pragmatiste, se vdiqem nga dogmat demokratike te sheqerosura me liri, drejtesi, vllazeri, bollek material...
Asgjëkund nuk të çon përderisa ndërmjet protestuesve janë tipa si Tik llapaj e Agron shehu të dy të korruptuar dhe plot drejtues partish fatazmë …nuk ka drejtues të zgjedhur a të shpallur. Sa kohë protesta ben vetgjygjsi dhe sforcon qytetarët per pjesmarrje me çohu nga kafja dhe mbështetet nga emigrantë apo studentë që kanë braktisur vendin e tyre për përfitime personale dhe tani shohin Shqiprinë si vend ku mund të përfitojnë më shumë se aty ku janë me një fjalë interesi personal
