In Albania, prices are abused not only by local businesses, but also by foreign companies. Economy expert Ilir Ciko has conducted a study, where he monitored 150 consumer products, randomly selected from 13 product categories and sold in Albania by three large European companies.

It turns out that the average price of products in the Albanian market were 79.7 percent higher than the average price of the same products, sold by the same operators in the European Union markets.

In the graph we also see the different types of products and how much Albanians pay compared to European consumers for the same products, starting from cosmetics, furniture, food for adults and children, detergents and even pet food.

But is this only an Albanian phenomenon?

In the study, the comparison of the sale price of the products based on their value from these three European companies in different countries, including the region, was made.

The data show that the same products, from the same companies, are sold much more expensively in Albania than in Serbia, Kosovo, Ukraine, the Netherlands and Greece.

But why does this happen? Why do Albanian consumers face price abuses?

There are two main reasons: the lack of functioning of state institutions and their lack of reaction in the case of price abuses, and secondly, the government's fiscal policy.

In other words, high taxes and mainly Value Added Tax or VAT, also known as consumption tax.
