In the period 2017-2022, the number of cattle in Albania decreased by almost 200 thousand heads. According to INSTAT at the end of 2016, the country counted 492 thousand cattle. But at the end of last year, the figure dropped to 297 thousand heads. The drop is a full 40 percent.
And yet, the extermination of cattle is only one aspect of the total extermination of livestock.
The number of minors decreased by almost 800,000 during the same period. That of pigs by 44 thousand, while the number of poultry decreased by almost 1.5 million. This strong decrease in the number of heads of livestock is causing a decrease to the same extent in the main livestock products.
In the last two years alone, milk production has fallen by 82 thousand tons nationally, while that of meat by 11 thousand tons. Albanian products are being replaced more and more by Serbian or other countries.
The second mandate of the socialist government has turned out to be dramatic for livestock. The numbers do not simply speak of a decline, but of the total annihilation of a sector.
The plot on the ground is clear. Thousands of families in the countryside are slaughtering or selling their cattle and leaving Albania.
The government's propaganda for increasing financial support for farmers has not been enough to stop the annihilating phenomenon. At these rates, very soon only donkeys will remain in Albania.
Because INSTAT statistics show that ungulates are the ones with the lowest decline in numbers.
