The European Union opposes the draft bill that is expected to be voted on in Parliament regarding “fiscal peace.” The European Union's main criticism concerns money laundering.
In a response to Top News, the EU delegation in Tirana says it is concerned about "discouraging compliance with tax obligations" and emphasizes strengthening measures to combat money laundering.
“ The European Commission has discussed the “Fiscal Peace” proposal with the Albanian authorities, including at the meeting of the Subcommittee on Trade, Industry, Customs and Taxation on 25–26 November. The Commission highlighted serious concerns related to the discouragement of tax compliance and reiterated the need to put strong anti-money laundering measures in place in the proposal, while continuing to work on reducing the large number of tax exemptions. We look forward to addressing these concerns.
We further recall that the EU Common Position on Fundamentals underlines the importance for Albania to ensure that “possible amnesties and voluntary tax compliance programmes are in line with the country's plans and advance the fight against organised crime and are in line with the EU acquis and relevant international standards, such as those set by Moneyval and FATF” , the EU delegation said.
This is the second reaction against the draft proposed by the Government, after that of the American Chamber of Commerce. The latter also has the main concern about money laundering, but also the violation of fair competition.
