America spoke…and congratulated!

This time, as if to prove that nothing is the same after January 20, the Trump administration is content with a brief congratulatory message, deliberately not getting into the essence of the electoral process...

It was the first to take a stand whenever Albania went through a delicate situation, while today it is among the last to express itself on the parliamentary elections. The United States government has finally taken an official stance on the electoral process of two weeks ago and has done so through a congratulatory message. The only element that reveals how Washington has read the recent Albanian elections. “We congratulate the people of Albania on the parliamentary elections and look forward to continuing our close partnership with Albania,” the embassy writes.

A telegram more than an analysis and extended official stance. A short phrase in stark contrast to the official statements of past elections, where there were messages for all parties, winners and losers, but also for the quality of the process and the authenticity of the result.

This time, as if to prove that nothing is the same after January 20, the Trump administration is content with a brief congratulation, deliberately not getting into the essence of the electoral process, so as not to create certain dynamics within Albanian politics, which had been eagerly awaiting this stance for days.

First, if there were reservations about the May 11 elections, the US would not congratulate them, but would maintain a different stance. A tougher one, or they could pass over in silence what happened in Albania on election day. In this perspective, the opposition has not received what it expected from the American stance on the elections. Just as it did not receive the lifting of the non grata status for Berisha or any message of support before the elections.

On the other hand, Rama may be pleased with the fact that the American side states that "we expect to continue our close partnership with Albania." A not-so-coded and difficult-to-understand message, that the Americans expect continuity and nothing else. The US recognizes the result and expects to continue cooperation with the government!

One last element: the US is repeatedly inviting us to remove it from the role of supreme arbiter that we have given it for the last 30 years. It has done this by practically remaining silent about every event, crisis or conflict that has consumed Albania since President Trump took office. It has done this by practically canceling all assistance programs, as it has done all over the world, by removing declamatory support for the new justice system and SPAK, and by remaining silent throughout the last election campaign.

The US is telling us that it no longer wants to be the door we knock on at any hour of the day or night whenever we mess up our country. It is a fair decision that comes to us through an election statement that, as short, telegraphic and without details or positions between the lines, gives us the major message that times have changed and that we need to find the former supreme judge elsewhere. Perhaps it is better this way, since they are inviting us to finally mature.
