
How has the number of people leaving Albania changed since January 1, 1990?
At the end of 1989, 3,182,417 Albanian citizens lived in Albania (according to the rigorous population census that took place at the time). Only 31,824 Albanian citizens were in political or economic emigration before 1990 (according to the information provided by the Ministry of Interior after the fall of the communist regime).
If no citizen born in Albania had left the country since January 1, 1990, we would have a total of 4,025,424 Albanian citizens in the country at the end of 2023. This figure is calculated by adding the population at the end of 1989 all births within the territory of the country, and deducting all deaths (also within the territory of the country).

From the Civil Status database, it appears that 1,536,889 babies were born in Albania from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 2023. In the same period, 693,882 citizens died in Albania. So the natural increase was 843,007 in the period 1990-2023. And if no citizen born in Albania had left the country since January 1, 1990, at the end of last year, we would have a total of 4,025,424 Albanian citizens within the territory of the country.
The natural increase was large in the first decade of the period under analysis, and then slowed down considerably in the other two decades.
How has the number of people leaving Albania changed since January 1, 1990?
By comparing the number of inhabitants that Albania would have if none of those born here had left, with the actual number of inhabitants registered by the censuses developed in the last three decades, it is possible to calculate how the number of those who left has progressed Albania.

In the USA, the Census Bureau reports that there are about 225 thousand Albanians of origin from all over the world, but there is no data on how many of these are Albanian citizens who have gone to live there. According to Canada's Census-2021, about 42 thousand Albanians lived there, but without specifying from which arboreal land they originated. The 2016 census of Australia specifies that 2,874 of its residents were born in Albania. While the Federal Statistical Office of Switzerland reports that about 300,000 Albanians live there, but the vast majority are originally from the Albanian lands around Albania.
Based on EUROSTAT data, the most accurate about Albanian citizens who left after 1990, it turns out that the number of those who obtained residence permits in EU countries was high in the period 2008-2010. Thereafter, there was a steady decline in the annual number of residence permits. But last year, this number returned to the level of 2010.
NOTE: On December 31, 2023, there were 4.61 million Albanian citizens in the Civil Registry. Of these, about 4 million were born in Albania and about 610 thousand were born outside Albania.
