Asking why a man sleeps in the shade of a maple tree is like asking why a woman cooks between breakfast and lunch.
Piluri is a village above Himare. When the weather is good, from the height of Piluri you can also see the Italian coasts that sparkle at night. Now there are less than 100 inhabitants living in Pilur, most of whom gather every afternoon in a square, in the middle of which stands a very large tree that provides shade to locals and foreigners. Outside the shade of this centuries-old tree, a couple of tourist bars and a monument in memory of the partisans of the village, which is always in the sun, have been erected.
I went to Pilur one afternoon when some men were sitting on the benches of the square talking. The children of the village had smeared the benches with mud, to tease the old men who were sitting on thorns. Everyone was careful not to get their pants dirty, not so much for fear of mud but more for fear of women. Piluri is a village that has more men than children, which makes the women a bit wild. Perhaps for this reason, one of them was sleeping together with the rosaries and the hat that he had carefully placed before falling asleep. Since I didn't want to wake him up, I asked his friends to take a picture of him and they said, as many times as you want, laughing. I understand they found a way to taunt him when he wakes up.
I didn't ask them why that man with the rosary was sleeping there in the square even though his house should be no more than 50 meters away. These are things that are taken for granted and you don't have to ask. Asking why a man sleeps in the shade of a maple tree is like asking why a woman cooks between breakfast and lunch. In village squares that are soiled by children and cleaned by women, men do everything. They are born there, they play there, they grow up, they marry, they fight, they reconcile, they sleep and they die.
