Donald Trump is a monster, and a fool at that, as his statement to British soldiers who served in Afghanistan shows.
The attempt to invade the sovereign territory of loyal ally Denmark; the deeply ignorant, norm-shattering speech at Davos last week; and the contemptuous assessment of the leaders of the UK and the EU showed beyond doubt what an existential, relentless, and unspeakable threat the 47th US president truly is.
All the talk after Davos is about what the UK, the EU and NATO should do in the future to resist and contain Trump, and how to counter his efforts to overthrow the rules-based global order.
However, a sense of proportion is required. If his policies and attitudes are removed from the equation, it is clear that the unifying but familiar post-war world of great power rivalries and de facto spheres of influence remains largely unchanged. The continuities outnumber the fissures. It is also clear that Europe cannot ultimately resolve this crisis.
Trump and only Trump is the main and urgent problem. And Trump is an American-made monster. It is up to Americans to undo this and set things right, which they will surely do, sooner or later.
The still-simmering crisis in Greenland is the latest example, after Venezuela, Gaza, and Iran, of Trump's neo-imperial overreach. If he really wanted to increase security in the Arctic, he should have asked for it.
Denmark is already contractually obligated to accept more and larger US bases. NATO allies and the EU are willing to help. But what Washington really wants is to swallow up all of its territory and resources, regardless of the wishes of the Greenlanders.
Trump's disgusting, undignified, and cowardly performance at Davos revealed a man whose ego knows no bounds, whose excessive ambition to rule the world is spiraling out of control. This is no exaggeration. How else can we understand the "Peace Board," a multibillion-dollar club for dictators, with him as president-for-life, seemingly destined to replace the UN?
Trump's heavy-handed tactics, including the usual threats of tariffs, have caused near-panic among European leaders. The EU's Ursula von der Leyen's response was typical. "The shift in the international order is not just seismic, it's permanent," she warned.

Peacemakers receded into the background, as shock and anger turned into defiance. Europe strongly opposed Trump’s “tightening.” One diplomat called it a “Rubicon moment.” But there are limits to what he can do.
The hope lies in the fact that most Americans agree that Trump is a mistake, if not a blatant and despicable aberration. Polls show that the majority remain strongly pro-European and pro-NATO. And they surely understand that this harmful, all-encompassing travesty of the White House cannot continue unchecked.
For the sake of their friends, for the sake of the global order, for the sake of their own sanity, the silent majority of the US must now act quickly, decisively, unitedly, and, if necessary, with an unusual degree of constitutional flexibility, to limit his despotic rule before things get worse.
Citizens of the Republic! Impeach Trump. Declare him unfit. Rise up, rebel, and overthrow him as George III was overthrown 250 years ago. Do what it takes to peacefully rid the world of this shameless and shameless usurper, and to overthrow this would-be king, but do it quickly. Disrupt his plans. Cast out the monster.
