The “Veliaj” case is the complete opposite of the “Berisha” and “Meta” cases. The latter two engage in politics to avoid criminal problems, while Veliaj was detained to block his political path.
Erion Veliaj is today the mayor who has won 3 mandates as mayor of Tirana, and naturally he is heading towards the top, thanks to his young age. A completely normal journey that for many is frightening and envious.
Veliaj has not consumed the stages, but has consolidated his position in a political role that is visible, popular, and sufficiently recognizable.
In addition, Tirana today is a capital city that is not only developing but also has an important relationship with major global centers.
Mayors of European capitals from Rome to Barcelona, from Madrid to Rotterdam, from Athens to Istanbul often come to Tirana.
So politically, Erion Veliaj, as his opponents openly say, is a bone that they cannot chew politically.
The "criminal module" was found to overthrow him at the threshold of his third term, precisely at that period when it could also be called the start of the "New Beginning" of his career. An event that is naturally strong, it is shocking, but above all it is challenging for the person who experiences it.
And Erion Veliaj seems to have been prepared for this phase, and since the day he suffered a great human and legal trauma, he is undoubtedly a political protagonist not of Tirana, but of Albania.
Veliaj has really turned the case against him into a real battle, not only legal but also political, but with one difference.
Not toxic at all. Of course he accuses, of course he attacks, and even given the barrage of rocket attacks that come every night, he counterattacks more, but he remains a protagonist of the political war in the thick of it. Veliaj, even though in prison, and his wife also in custody, has chosen the political battle, without any compromise.
This is a battle that Erion Veliaj, especially in the face of the former socialists and others, is training, and is becoming more evident every day, in addition to all of this in the May 11 election campaign.
When he is in prison, he never misses a day, but sends his messages to the people who support him and those who attack him. A message that truly shows how much weight the politician has in the community and in the electorate.
Veliaj has a long battle ahead of him, but he cannot run in these elections because we are not in a local campaign but for the new Parliament.
Even though de jure Erion Veliaj is not the political leader of the Tirana district, with the pace he has started, in all likelihood he could actually be the political engine of the socialists in the capital. By communicating with them daily, he has explained everything about what is happening to him and the concept why he is waging this war.
It is very likely that in the end, Veliaj will be more than the political leader of Tirana, but will return to the political power of the left, after Edi Rama. Of course, he is at the beginning of the new battle, which is the battle of his second life...
