Ismail Kadare, looking for a place to release him

Ismail Kadare, looking for a place to release him

If he had known the chaos he caused with his escape, the writer, who in his fiction wandered so much between the living and the dead, between ghosts and graves, would have remained hostage to the untold story of his body, which it is already destined to change places at least twice. He will have a temporary resting place in Tufina, to travel afterwards, it is not known when and where...

The Albanian state proved once again that it is incapable, even to find a decent resting place for an outstanding personality that exceeds the national dimensions. The separation from the life of the great writer, Ismail Kadare, caught in the flagrant of frivolity an entire state, that in over a century of existence, has not made room to honor his prominent figures after death.

The chaos caused by the unannounced death of Kadare permeated the farewell speech of the Albanian Prime Minister, which, more than a tribute to the writer, sounded like a confession about his plight, where he had to find a place to go to commensurate with the immortality of Ismail. And the last farewell, from a solemn moment for Kadare, turned into an odyssey full of adventures for the prime minister, who was still not finding a grave that he thought was suitable to honor the writer.

As in the poem "Crystal" by Ismail, "...now I am looking for a place where I can let you go...", the Albanians heard in their last meeting with the writer, how he could not be laid to rest in the Cemetery of the Martyrs, but not near the Frashëri brothers and even less in the only remaining flower gardens, in front of the Rogner hotel or behind the prime minister's office. For all these proposals, the prime minister had refused, interpreting according to his mind what Ismail himself would have wanted. Not the martyrs, because Ismaili had not fallen a martyr nor had he wanted to be martyred. Not with the Frashëri brothers, because there was not much room between them and their eternal loneliness would be disturbed. Through flower gardens, no, because the dead must be separated from the living, all the more so that, according to Rama, Ismail fled from places where people gathered. Of course, these interpretations, due to the situation of a state that does not know where to make room for a personality, Ismail himself had no chance to confirm them.

And so, while waiting for "our pantheon" to be found, erected or invented, as for many things in Albania, the provisional "permit" of a resting place in the Tufina cemetery came in handy. For an as yet undetermined period, until the "building" of those who deserve to live after death is designed, normally by an internationally renowned studio. Then we will surely have another ceremony: inauguration, exhumation and reburial and another speech about the writer and the dignity of the Albanian state.

If he had known the chaos he caused with his escape, the writer, who in his fiction wandered so much between the living and the dead, between ghosts and graves, would have remained hostage to the untold story of his body, which it is already destined to change places at least twice. He will have a temporary resting place in Tufina, to travel afterwards, it is not known when and where, to another destination that will be deemed worthy by the prime minister.

The man who, while alive, did not surrender the freedom of his mind to any power, is now unable to decide the fate of his body. By thus materializing for death, the Albanian stupidity that fascinated him forever. The death of the writer who catches a country unprepared, the dilemmas and long meetings, the proposals and non-proposals, the prime minister's sleepless nights, the debates until dawn, to "look for a place to release him", would probably be the last novel of Ismail. Which he could not write, but made us all read. © Lapsi.al
